MATERIALS:
· Worsted weight yarn
· Approximate oz for the following color variations:
· 4 colors: less than 1 oz each of 3 wave colors, small amount of 1 accent color
· 3 colors: 1 oz each of 2 wave colors, small amount of 1 accent color
· 2 colors: 2 oz of 1 wave color, small amount of 1 accent color
· I-9 / 5.50 mm crochet hook
· Large-Eye Blunt Tapestry Needle (for weaving in ends)
FINISHED SIZE:
CHILD: 18-20” head circumference
ADULT: 20 - 22” head circumference
GAUGE:
Gauge is given in pattern instructions. Example: (13 sts, 1¼” in diameter)
NOTES & STITCHES USED:
· SC: Single Crochet - insert hook into stitch, YO & pull up a loop, pull through loops on hook.
· HDC: Half-Double Crochet - YO, insert hook into stitch, YO & pull up a loop, YO, pull through all 3 loops on hook.
· DC: Double Crochet - YO, insert hook into stitch, YO & pull up a loop, YO, pull through 2 loops, YO, pull through remaining 2 loops on hook.
· Sl St: Slip Stitch - insert hook, pull up loop and through 1st loop on hook.
· JOIN: shorthand for ending each round - slip stitch in the 1st stitch of the round.
· Beginning ch 1 does not count as a sc or hdc. Beginning ch 2 does count as a dc.
· PAY ATTENTION to where you start your stitches in each round. If you don’t pay close attention to this, your waves won’t line up properly. See the video tutorial for more help: http://youtu.be/7SoJuB_lCEI
· To change colors: With old color work last stitch to the last two loops on your hook. YO with new color & pull through. JOIN with new color.
PATTERN INSTRUCTIONS - CHILDBegin using the magic ring technique.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, work 8 hdc in magic ring. Pull loose end tight to close hole. JOIN in the 1st hdc (8 sts, 1”)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, work 2 hdc in each st to end. JOIN in the 1st hdc (16 sts, 2”)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, work 2 sc in same st, 1 sc in next st, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next st. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the 1st hdc (24 sts, 2½”)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, work 2 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the 1st hdc (32 sts, 3½”)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, work 2 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 3 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the 1st hdc (40 sts, 4½”)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, work 2 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 4 sts, *2 sc in next st, 1 sc in next 4 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the 1st hdc (48 sts, 5”)
Rnd 7: Ch 1, work 2 hdc in same st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 5 sts, *2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 4 sts, 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in next 5 sts. Repeat from * to last 4 sts. Work 2 hdc in next st, 1 hdc in last 3 sts. JOIN in the 1st hdc (57 sts)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, work 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st, [1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st, 1 dc in next st] repeat all instructions in the [ ] one more time, work 1 hdc in each of last 2 sts. Rnd 10 (16): Ch 2 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in next 4 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *1 dc in next 5 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the top of the ch 2 (60 sts).
Rnd 11: Ch 2 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in next 4 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *1 dc in next 5 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the top of the ch 2 (60 sts).
Rnd 12: Ch 1, work 1 sc in same st and in each st to end. JOIN in the 1st sc (60 sts)
Rnd 13: Ch 1, work *1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the 1st sc (60 sts).
Rnd 14: Ch 1, work 1 sc in same st, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, *1 sc in next 3 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts, 1 dc in next 5 sts, 1 hdc in next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. JOIN in the 1st sc (60 sts).
Rnd 15: Ch 1, work 1 sc in same st and in each st to end. JOIN in the 1st sc (60 sts). Count your stitches.
Rnd 16: Repeat Rnd 10
For a longer beanie: continue in pattern repeats (Rnd 11, Rnd 12, Rnd 13…) until desired length.
End on a “Rnd 10” or “Rnd 13” repeat. Continue to edging:
Rnd 17: Ch 1, work 1 sc in same st and in each st to end. JOIN in the 1st sc (60 sts)
Rnd 18: Ch 1, work 1 hdc in same st and in each st to end. JOIN in the 1st hdc (60 sts)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

I just learned the magic ring so that I could do this hat. I'm doing grey and black as the big colors, with dark red for all the sc. Can't wait to see how it comes out :)

ReplyDeleteit looks like all the rounds that are just single stitches and nothing else are when you change to the third color (black in all of the examples) and then alternate between the other colors after that.
ReplyDeleteI love it!!! Im gonna make one for my husband for this xmas and i want to make it WVU colors, my question is can i use a H or J hook? i lost my I one and his head is a little bigger than mine, im 21" so im thinking he can be around 24 or so. what do you think which one i should use?

ReplyDeleteI just tried to make this hat and am having trouble. :( I am really not understanding where we are supposed to do the chain 1, hdc in same st and the chain 1, hdc in next st under where you put pay attention. Is this when you start the rounds? And are you supposed to do both of those things in each round. It doesn't seem clear to me.
ReplyDeleteSorry for the confusion Andrea! Yes, that's at the beginning of the rounds. You'll work "Ch 2, dc in next st" in one round (like round 10) and "Ch 2, dc in same st" in the next round (like round 11). basically it's to keep your waves aligned. If you work into the same st as the ch on every round, you'll be fine, but your waves'll be crooked. If you need more help, you can e-mail me (liz@playinhookydesigns.com)
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure there's a mistake in here somewhere around Rnd 10. The first two ripple fits into the other row like gears, but then the rest of the ripples lay on top of each other. Does this make sense? I know I'm reading it right. I've tried it twice, the same problem each time.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the pattern! Modified it to use some super bulky yarn I had bought for a hat, and skipping ahead a few rows worked exactly how I thought it would (increased to 48 sts instead of 60 sts in the child pattern). Perfect outcome, easy to follow, even for a rookie like me.

I only got one problem, just like Andrea I'm confused about the "Pay attention" part :(
At the end of round 8 it says "omitting the last “1 dc in next st” on last repetition" - so I got one st left of the old row.
And I don't know what's next.
Is it the "Pay attention"-round #1 saying "Ch 1, hdc in same st—work your first hdc in the same st as the ch 1"?
Or is it the "Pay attention"-round #3 saying "Every sc round will start with “sc in same st”" because it's a sc-row?
Or do I simply have to join my first st of the row and start with the sc-round?
I hope you can help me! :/

ReplyDeleteim pretty sure i figured out where the mistake in the pattern is. where it says rows 16-19 to repeat with 10-13, it should be 10-15, and then, continue to however long you want it, repeating 10-15. if you follow these directions with the 10-13, your waves will be on top of each other instead of being waves (if that makes sense). i just finished the second set of 10-15, ill continue to make it longer and let ya'll know how it goes.

ReplyDeleteI love this hat but can you help me try to figure out a problem I am having. I never see a decrease ...the hat always remains 60 stitches? How does it get smaller to stay on the child's head?

Stacy - It stays 60 sts for the entire body of the beanie. It should stay on just fine. But everyone crochets a little differently. If you find that your hat is too big, I'd recommend using a smaller hook before making any major pattern changes. Most of the feedback I've gotten about this particular hat is that it works up small. So I hope it won't be a problem for you.
ReplyDeleteI think that is my problem. I used the rope-like yarn (the only soft one I could find in orange and blue) so off of previous posts, I used the J hook. I did my own decrease in the last two rounds and it seems okay. I am now making it in a regular weighted yarn so I will let you know. Thanks for the updates. I am picking it up after 30 years of not crocheting so it slowly comes back to me. SMILE.

ReplyDeleteI need help. I've been working on this pattern and I keep getting stuck on round 8. I'm not sure where I am messing up but I should end with 66 stitches and I keep ending with 64. I've undone this several times and I've redone - same outcome. Round 7 is the 56 stitches I should have. Any advice?

@Kris - Hmmm... it sounds like you're missing some of the increases. One of the places it may be easy to overlook is the sc increases. Basically every other time you work sc's in rnd 8, you increase by working "1 sc in next st, 2 sc in next st". Could that be where the problem is?
ReplyDeleteLiz, I am having the same problem as Kris. After completing row 8, I have 65 stitches and one space left over on the previous row for stitch number 66. However, I have completed the pattern above for row 8. I have done this a few times and counted both my real stitches and the pattern stitches as written above. I am counting the first chain 2 as a stitch also---which brings me to my total of 65. WOuld you mind counting the stitches in the pattern above and double checking me? I know I am missing it somewhere, but after multiple tries and multiple counts, I am still off. Thanks!

I was having a little trouble at first but after reading through the comments I just downloaded the pdf lol But I do have another question not related to construction, what yarn did you use? I know its a ww, but i really like how the yarn you used looks compared to mine lol im pretty sure i used rhss for the white contrast, caron lb of love for the black wave and vannas choice for the red.. i stitch pretty tight so i started out with a k hook. I prefer to use all the same yarn in one project, just looks more neat and uniform to me :-)

ReplyDeleteThank you! I use Vanna's Choice by LionBrand and I alway crochet in both loops (unless otherwise stated, but for this beanie it's all both loops). :)
